If you need proof in the existence of magic and faeries, look no further than the phenomenon of fireflies. I will never forget my first sighting of the wee glittering orbs in a centuries old cemetery in Mexico, where I was walking with my then love on our way to dinner. Decades later, stopped temporarily by the side of the road in the flatlands of Kansas, I was simply gazing out over the cornfields as I leaned up against the truck, and it took me a moment to realize just what I was seeing. "Fireflies!!," I shouted with joy. My friend just shook his head, grinning, for he was no stranger to their presence.
Now, in this beautiful immensity of a Pennsylvania garden, I can sit outside every night and watch them come out to, uh, play. They've been enticed to land on my hands and arms, taking off again with a flash of light. As my bedroom door opens out onto the second storey terrace, sans screen, they've even made their way inside during the night, blinking delightfully around my room. Ah, what utter wondrousness of nature!
Here then is my homage to the lovely firefly, I hope you enjoy them.
