One of my favorite growing things is wisteria. Our first remembered meeting was in Setagaya, Tokyo, during a heavy December snowfall. Whilst everything else around was covered in a blanket of white, and being showered with white, old gnarled trunks and branches of the deepest brown and grey twisted around a bus stop enclosure, and were literally dripping with thousands of blossom clusters.

No leaves, just the bare wood and ethereal lavender violet flowers. Tears of awe sprang into my eyes as I suddenly stopped walking, and my Japanese companion laughed with delight. "You've not seen this before?" "Never," I breathed into the stark exquisiteness of the moment.

Now I live in a house in Wisconsin that has an entire side yard fence covered in old wisteria. Not as ancient as the over a hundred year old beauty in Japan, but established enough to not be going anywhere soon.

Ours is still covered with leaves, still sans flowers, but I enjoy each day knowing what's coming.

The swirling unicorn colors of this yarn, and some dried and twisty vines hanging on the fence brought that delightful memory back. I'm definitely keeping one skein of this batch for myself, meaning there's only four for the rest of you!
